2004 - Wild West Fete

The Scouts' and Guides' Annual Fete at Romilly Park on Saturday 3rd July was again a huge success, even with the poor with weather forecast which turned out to be incorrect, and the sun shone for all the proceedings.

Parade BandThe afternoon commenced with the Scouts and Guides of Barry being led into the arena by the Regimental Band of the Royal Welsh Regiment, with the groups' flags leading in almost 1000 youngsters from the area.

The official flagbreak was carried out by Hanna Davies of the 2nd / 4th Barry Scout Group, to accompanyment from the Band with the breaking of the Union flag and the hoisting of the Welsh Dragon to the flagpole Yard Arm.

The Official opening was carried out by Jane Hutt the Assemble Member and Minister of Health and Social Services. In her official opening she spoke of the immensely impressive sight of so many youngsters in the arena and the lead it gave to Barry, and congratulated the Fete Committee for planning such a wonderful event for the Town.

2004 Fete ProgrammeMr Keith Burfoot then presented on behalf of the Chief Scout, Mr George Purvis the Chief Scout Gold award, which is the highest award in the scouts section, to two members of the 11th Barry Sea Scout Group, Philip Ventrise and Michael Barnes.

The opening proceedings were concluded with the Beavers doing the Beaver Slap by and the Cubs performing their long established 'Grand Howl' lead by the Sixers from each pack.

The main Arena events then followed with the Devil's Horsemen, presented by Gerard Naprous giving a dazzling performance of Stunt riding in there Wild West Show. The outstanding performing horse was 'Dante' the black stallion who is the horse used in the Black Horse Bank advert on television.

Ben Whitmarsh-Knight and Daniel Thomas then fought as giant Sumo wrestlers but the wind really proved the winner in these bouts.

The Brownies and Rainbows dressed in wonderfully colourful and original costumes, (mostly designed and made by themselves, with a little help from Mums & Dads. They danced a birthday Bonanza to the delight of the audience.

The Beavers dressed as Clowns, in outfits they had made over a number of weeks at their meetings, showed how imaginative and well motivated the sections are. Under the watchful eye of Michelle Phillips the District Beaver liaison officer, cunningly disguised as a jester herself, the beavers raced around the arena climbing through tunnels, and under nets, weaving between obstacles and into baths of balls etc. Enjoyed by the Beavers and public alike.

All the cubs enjoyed a wild West Campfire, which was not heard to well, by the crowd due to the wind, but the roving microphone high-lighted some good voices, and others, although most were song with great gusto. Each pack had to run around an obstacle course in various types of transport from boats to aircraft, which each of the Cub Packs had built especially for the event.

The Scouts and Guides finished the arena display with their annual competition for the Jewson Trophy. The push ball competition again proved difficult with the giant ball at one stage not just leaving the playing area but joining in the crowds around the stalls.

The winners of the Lucky Programme were:
1st £250.00 Susan Morgan, Woodham Park
2nd £50.00 L Canterbury, Ael y Coed

Also the new Field Marshall Gary Ware, all the workers who laboured all day on the Friday in the showers setting up the arena. The countless helpers setting up the Stalls. The parents and friends organising each groups contributions, and the Leaders who week by week work towards this event.

The Fete Committee is especially appreciative of the members of 372 (Barry) Squadron Air Training Corps, who man the gates and organise the car parking. He thanked the Vale of Glamorgan Council for the use of Romilly Park and the excellent facilities they had provided with waste disposal etc. The Treasurer Mr Alan Morgan anticipated the event would be a financially successful one with every group raising much needed funds for their continued operation throughout the year.
