2007 - 100 Years of Scouting

Flag Parade

The Barry and District Scout and Guide Annual Fete, held at Romilly Park on Saturday 7th July, was again a huge success. The week before the fete the organisers watched the weather forecast with unwarranted concern. The fete was opened, in glorious sunshine, with a march past of the Rainbows, Beavers, Brownies, Cubs, Guides, Scouts, Rangers and Explorers accompanied by the Welsh Piping Society.

The flag break was carried out by a representative from each of the Scout Troops.

2007 marks the centenary of Scouting in the UK. Events are being held nation wide as part of this celebration. The theme for this year’s fete was 100 year’s of Scouting and to mark this, the fete committee had searched for the oldest Scout from Barry.

Opener

The official opening was carried out by Mr Noel Bishop, a former King’s Scout in the 1930s. In his official opening Mr Bishop spoke of his memories of Scouting and how pleased he was to see the number of children in the arena continuing to enjoy the benefits of Scouting and Guiding.

Mrs Jane Rudd, District Commissioner for the Vale of Glamorgan Guides, gave a presentation of thanks to Mrs Margaret Foan her predecessor who has recently retired. Jane noted that this was probably the first time she had seen Margaret lost for words.

Award winners Presenting award

The winner of the Best Decorated Stall was presented to the 5th Barry Sea Scout Group, whose theme was Mafeking. In Lord Robert Baden-Powell's first publication intended for boys - the first issue of the part series Scouting for Boys, published on January 15th 1908 - the Mafeking Cadets were clearly acknowledged as the inspiration behind the formation of the Scout Movement.

The winners of the colouring competition, as judged by the members from the Barry District Scout Fellowship were: Beavers Mabli Evans (2nd/4th Barry), Corey Mickelsen (6th Barry), Ryan Connor (1st Barry); Cubs Angharad Morgan (1st Penmark), Aimee-Leigh Booker (5th Barry), Jack Brine (5th Barry); Rainbows Sian Morris (1st Rhoose), Darcey Gravett (1st Rhoose), Rosie Williams (1st Rhoose); Brownies Jessica Kinson (5th Barry), Beth Humphreys (10th Barry), Serena Thomas (2nd Rhoose).

The main Arena events then followed with teams from each Scout Group in the Barry District and teams from Barry Guides East and Vale of Glamorgan Guides competing in Graham Fisher’s International “It’s A Knockout” Competition.

On behalf of the Scout & Guide Fete Committee, I would like to thank everyone who attended and helped to make the 2007 fete another great success. The weather was fantastic with over 7,000 people attended the fete. I would like to thank everyone, who helped set up and run the event, which is thought to be the largest Scout and Guide Fete in the UK, the countless helpers setting up the stalls, the parents and friends organising each group’s contributions, and the Leaders who week by week work towards this event. I would also like to than the Vale of Glamorgan Council for the use of Romilly Park and the excellent facilities they had provided with waste disposal etc, the Fire Brigade, Cwm Talwg Community Centre, St John’s Ambulance, Integrated Graphics, Edson Printing and South Wales Police. The Fete Committee is especially appreciative of the members of 372 (Barry) Squadron Air Training Corps, who man the gates and organise the car parking.

I would finally like to thank the sponsors and fete patrons who helped to support the Fete financially: Cllr Ian Barry Shaw, Cllr Richard Bertin, Cllr Clive Williams, Cllr Emlyn Williams, Mrs Myra E James, Mr Jack Hardman, Mr James S McChesney, Mr Phillip Walters, Mr Brian L Whitaker, Mr R C H Forbes, Mrs Sylvia J Davies, Mr Michael Richardson, Mrs Julia Trevithick, Mrs Veronica Kirby, Mrs Mary Camm, Mr S.
