Barry Scout and Guide Fete 2008
Rain didn’t stop play at the Barry and District Scout and Guide Annual Fete, held at Romilly Park on Saturday 5th July. The 55th fete was opened with a march past of the Rainbows, Beavers, Brownies, Cubs, Guides, Scouts, Rangers and Explorers accompanied by the Welsh Piping Society.

The Colour Party duty, for the official flag break, was carried out by 11th Barry Sea Scout Group.
The official opening was carried out by Mr Chris Davies, who has supported the Scout and Guide Fete since 1989. In his official opening Mr Davies said how “spectacular to see all the children and young people here today in the arena showing how scouting and guiding is surviving”. He also thanked the group leaders for providing their time free allowing the children and young people to gain skills which they will be able to use throughout their life.
The theme for this year’s fete was cartoons and the winner of the Best Decorated Stall was presented to the 11th Barry Sea Scout Group, for their interpretation of Toy Story.
The winners of the colouring competition, as judged by the members from the Barry District Scout Fellowship were: Beavers Saul Robertson (1st Barry), Matthew Griffiths (1st Barry), Harriet McCarthy (6th Barry); Rainbows Catlin Dawling (2nd Barry), Kelsey Dawe (2nd Barry), Lauren Harris (2nd Barry).
The winners of the cartoon competition were: 1st prize - Poppy Tremlett and Maisie Ladner (2nd Cadoxton Brownies), 2nd prize - Holly Allinson and Mia Anthony (2nd Cadoxton Brownies) and 3rd prize – Courtney Alford (2nd Cadoxton Brownies). Due to the weather conditions the prizes were not presented during the opening ceremony; they will be formally presented to the winners at their group meeting.

The winners of the Lucky Programme Draw were
1st: £250 – Susan Curran of Barry,
2nd: £50 – Susan Cooper of Barry,
3rd: Diesel Watch - A Stone of Barry,
4th: Morrisons Gift Voucher – Angela Clarke of Barry,
5th: Tesco Gift Voucher – Neil Bainbridge of Wenvoe.
Following the official opening Team MAD display team lived up to their name, providing dare devil stunts. Team M.A.D are Europe's largest and best known dedicated Mountainbike Stunt/Trials display Team.
The It’s A Scouting and Guiding Knockout was a huge success. Despite the clouds, rain and wind the Beavers, Rainbows, Cubs, Brownies, Scouts and Guides proved that Scouting and Guiding is fun. It was even reported that the Explorers wanted to join in and have a go at the inflatable assault course.

On behalf of the Scout & Guide Fete Committee, I would like to thank everyone who attended and helped with the 55th Annual Scout and Guide Fete. Despite the weather fun was had by the Beavers, Rainbows, Cubs, Brownies, Scouts and Guides. The weather was the worst we’ve had since 1968 but it didn’t stop play. I would like to thank everyone, who helped set up and run the event, which is thought to be the largest Scout and Guide Fete in the UK, the countless helpers setting up the stalls, the parents and friends organising each group’s contributions. I would also like to than the Vale of Glamorgan Council for the use of Romilly Park, the Cwm Talwg Community Centre, St John’s Ambulance, South Wales Police, Headworks, Morrisons, Tescos and McDonalds. The Fete Committee is especially appreciative of the members of Army Cadets and the Explorer Units who manned the gates and organise the car parking and for the sponsors and fete patrons who helped to support the Fete financially.
The Fete Committee is always trying to improve on our annual event and would appreciate any feedback through our survey which is here.
Finally on behalf of the Scouting and Guiding Community and also as a parent I would like to thank the leaders who week by week provide the time and energy to run the Scout and Guide Groups within Barry and the District.
Cathie Steele, Organising Secretary
