The 2009 Annual Scout & Guide Fete took place on Saturday 4th July 2009.

Barry Scout and Guide Annual Fete, which is thought to be the largest Scout and Guide Fete in the UK, once again demonstrated that it is a firm fixture in the annual events within Barry. The first Scout event was held in 1933 and has become a tradition on the first Saturday of July, raising money to ensure that Scouting and Guiding continues in the area. This year’s fete, the 56th fete for the Scout and Guides, opened with a march past of the Rainbows, Beavers, Brownies, Cubs, Guides, Scouts, Rangers and Explorers accompanied by the Welsh Piping Society. To celebrate 100 years of Sea Scouting the Colour Party duty, for the official flag break, was carried out by scouts from the four Sea Scout Groups; 1st Barry, 5th Barry, 6th Barry and 11th Barry Sea Scout Groups.

The official opening was carried out by Assembly Member Jane Hutt. In her opening address Ms Hutt congratulated the Scout and Guide Groups on their marvellous event. She thanked the group leaders and Fete Committee Members for their continued input into Scouting and Guiding.

The theme for this year’s fete was Space and Sea Scouting and the winner of the Best Decorated Site was presented to the 1st Barry Sea Scout Group. The Best Stall was presented to 1st Penmark with Porthkerry Scout Group.

The winners of the Lucky Programme Draw were;
1st : £250 - Linda Rees of Barry,
2nd : Portrait photo session at Francis Kestle's Studio - Linda Jones of Barry,
3rd : £50 - Gemma Jones of Barry
4th : £25 - Rhiannon Matthias of Barry

Following the official opening, the arena programme kept visitors entertained throughout the afternoon, with displays from the Welsh Piping Society, the Kyokushin Karate Club and the Welsh Bockers. The It’s A Scouting and Guiding Knockout was a huge hit with the Beavers, Rainbows, Cubs, Brownies, Scouts and Guides, demonstrating that Scouting and Guiding is fun.

The Scout & Guide Fete Committee would like to thank everyone who attended and helped with the 56th Annual Scout and Guide Fete. Thanks are given, in particular, to those who helped set up and run the event, the countless helpers setting up the stalls, the parents and friends organising each group’s contributions; the sponsors and patrons who provide needed financial support; the Vale of Glamorgan Council; Barry Town Council; the Cwm Talwg Community Centre; St John’s Ambulance; South Wales Police, and the Army Cadets, Dom Stocqueler - www.welshicons.org.uk for his photography services.

The Fete Committee would like to particular say thank you to Neil (the Parkie) and the other staff at the Vale of Glamorgan County Council who provide their support of the event.

The Fete Committee is always trying to improve on our annual event and would appreciate any feedback through our survey which is available here.
